FAQ

Can I mirror my Mac screen to my iPhone?

Yes, that's what Beam does. Install Beacon on your Mac and Beam on your iPhone, pair them once, and your Mac screen streams to your phone over local WiFi. No cloud, no account. With Beam Unlimited it also works when you are away from home, over the internet or mobile data.

Does AirPlay work from Mac to iPhone?

No. AirPlay only goes one way: iPhone or iPad to Apple TV, AirPlay displays, or another Mac. There is no native Apple solution for Mac-to-iPhone.

Does Beam require an internet connection?

Not on your own network. Over local WiFi, screen and audio go directly from your Mac to your iPhone and nothing touches the internet. Streaming from outside your home network is different: that uses Tailscale, which needs both devices online. Even then the connection is encrypted end to end between your own two devices and Beam operates no servers in the path, but it is not an offline feature.

How do I set it up?

Download Beacon for your Mac and Beam for your iPhone (both free). Open Beam on your iPhone and tap Pair Your Mac. Open Beacon from your Mac menu bar and scan the code. Then tap Start in Beam.

Can I use Beam when I'm away from home?

Yes, with Beam Unlimited. Streaming on your local WiFi is free. Streaming from outside your home network is part of the one-time Unlimited unlock, and it works by putting your Mac and iPhone on the same Tailscale network so they connect directly and encrypted, with no Beam server in the middle. Tailscale itself is free for personal use.

What are the system requirements?

Beacon requires macOS 14 (Sonoma) or later. Beam requires iOS 16 or later. Both devices need to be on the same WiFi network, or on the same Tailscale network if you are streaming from somewhere else with Beam Unlimited.

Is Beam free?

Beam is free with a 30-minute session limit per day, then a 24-hour cooldown. A one-time in-app purchase unlocks unlimited sessions.

Is Beam open source?

Yes. Both apps are open source under the GNU Affero General Public License v3.0, so you can read exactly what they do with your screen and audio rather than taking our word for it. You can use, modify and share them freely, including commercially, as long as you publish your changes under the same licence. If you want to build on Beam or Beacon inside a closed source product, a separate commercial licence is available.
